Oakham is a pictoresque market town in the county of Rutland. With a population of around 12,000 people the town is a relaxing place to live and work for its friendly local community, but also a wonderful place to visit for the numerous tourists who come to the area each year.
Oakham
Situated between Nottingham, Peterborough and Leicester, and with
good rail links to Birmingham and London, Oakham enjoys the tranquility
of rural life without being too far from the shopping, entertainment
and nightlife of major cities and nearby towns. As with much of the
UK, there are numerous landmarks dotted around the town and surrounding
villages. Visitors can drop by Oakham Castle, Tolethorpe Hall, the
Rutland County Museum, the Rutland Railway Museum, and Catmose Gallery.
Why not visit the weekly Wednesday and Saturday markets to get a
real taste of market town living! There's fresh produce, local foods
and other interesting items on sale weekly.
Rutland Water
Just outside of Oakham is Rutland Water, the largest man-made lake in western Europe. But Rutland Water is more than just a water sports haven. There's an internationally-renownl 3,100 acre reservoir providing a mix of sport, leisure and wildlife conservation and offers everyone the opportunity to try something new. As well as windsurfing, rock-climbing or canoeing, you can hire a dinghy, bicycle or fishing boat. Or you can just relax by the water and watch the action around the 25-mile-long shoreline.
Alternatively, why not visit the Normanton Church Museum then the Butterfly & Aquatic display and the Birdwatching Centre before settling back to a well-earned drink in the Harbour Bar or Tickled Trout Restaurant. There are two children's play areas and every car park has ice cream on sale so there's something for all generations.

The list of events varies year to year but on any calendar year you can expect to find festivals, fetes fairs, art and craft exhibitions and workshops, theatre productions, railway events, dog shows, national birdwatching events, fundraising events and more!
