Hunger Games

Last night we watched The Hunger Games. Really enjoyed it, well, any night off from watching the little one is enjoyable anyway. However I’d really wanted to see this movie. The storyline really intrigued me as for me, it was a harrowing reminder of where we all might end up one day. In our current reality-tv-obsessed and entertainment-craving state of society, and a growing divide between the wealthy and the poor, a future where the poor have to send out their kids (as ‘tributes’) in a televised death-match to entertain the wealthy is a not so giant leap compared to other movie storylines like giant transforming alien robots or time-travel, for instance. This trivialisation of life and unbalanced view of entertainment is pretty scary, mostly because it’s already visible in some of the car-crash reality tv we already have today – and for me, that’s the most worrying thing.
I also found it rather ironic that I was walking into a cinema to watch a movie called ‘The Hunger Games’ with a giant bag of popcorn, a big soft drink and a bag of pick & mix.
