Using page elements to attract attention
There’s often a need to focus the user’s attention on a specific area / element on the page. This can be done using typography (huge in-your-face wording), images, colour, minimalism, animation, imagery … and probably a few others I can’t think of right now.
Natwest do it with a combination of colour (the big expanses of blue and purple) and typography (WIN) … plus it’s an animation. Can’t. Avoid. Looking…

Firefox do it with a combination of typography (huge wording) and minimalism, a large breathing space around the message to give it even more focus.

The guardian.co.uk site is full of information, making attracting the eye to certain elements essential if user’s are to be directed (and helped!) in their browsing. Guardian use colour to highlight areas on the page.

Google, are the minimalist experts …

Channel4.com use a big old image to showcase a show. On page load, that’s just about all you see. No confusion there about what they want to push you through to do.

Getty images also use a large animated panel on the homepage to feature signing-up with a CTA to their registration page.
